Feng Shui Fish Tanks

Many people believe that fish tanks are a feng shui remedy. However, this is not strictly the case.

Feng Shui Fish Tanks

There is no such thing as a feng shui fish tank. However, there are components of a fish tank that align with the elements of feng shui. A fish tank is obviously filled with water, and water is one of the 5 elements on the bagua, the feng shui template. The element of water relates to learning, communicating and traveling. Water is an interesting element because it can be many things at once. Water can be soothing and gentle such as rain. It can also be destructive and harmful such as with hurricanes. Water provides life to all things on earth, but it also can wear away mountains. The color black can be used to increase the energy of water elements. Increasing water elements also strengthens the wood element whereas strengthening metal increases the energy of the water element. So, in this way, a fish tank can be used to enhance several elements if used appropriately.

Use of color in the selection of fish, decorations, and the tank itself can also be used to incorporate feng shui into your fish tank. In feng shui, different colors relate to different areas of life. So, people can incorporate the appropriate color in their fish tank design to strengthen certain energy flows. For instance, the color purple relates to prosperity and wealth. A fish tank full of purple decorations might be used to increase the energy flow related to prosperity and wealth. Blue relates to wisdom and knowledge. A fish tank in an office or study area could include fish with a blue coloring which would help bring forth the right type of energy for that environment.

While fish are not strictly a feng shui remedy, there are some Chinese superstitions that call for including fish. Chinese folklore says that adding 6 gold fish and one black fish into a fish tank increases the energy flow in the water element as the fish are meant to represent the metal element inside the water. Serious followers of this belief will tell you to do this by adding actual metal to the water.

Fish do add a couple of practical things that align with feng shui, however. They are beautiful and they create movement in the water. Also, being living creatures, they bring energy to the water element. This is positive in feng shui, but not required.

If a fish tank is allowed to go stagnant, negative energy flow will occur. So, before choosing a fish tank as a water element, you should consider your commitment to keeping it in good health. A properly maintained fish tank might bring the extra bit of positive energy into your life.
